Thetha Nathi Counselling Services was founded as a Non-Profit Organization in February 2022, to offer psychosocial counselling and support by qualified social workers in the Buffalo City area to those in need of such services. South Africa is experiencing an increase in reports of suicide, depression, anxiety, self-harm, bullying, gender-based violence, peer pressure, cyber sexual activity, child wellness and protection issues, substance abuse and numerous other harmful incidences among our youth.
Which was to alleviate long term effects of trauma.
Provide community-based services by placing social workers directly in schools within our
rural communities.
Ensure that children/youth become accustomed to easier access to a social worker.
Break the stigma that counselling is only for people who are mentally ill.
As soon as we assessed that a child might be in need of care and protection (depending on severity), we call in the caregivers and offer family preservation services.
We start by making the caregiver aware of the issues that the child may be facing due to their conduct, as well as the possible consequences.
We then offer the family ongoing counselling and support based on strict monitoring protocols, as the social worker is in contact with the child on a regular basis as they are placed at the school.
Out of 786 children found in need of care and protection, only 455 ended up as a formal referral. As we were able to work with the family and provide counselling, healing, empowerment and encouragement many caregivers were able to reflect on the error of their ways and make positive and constructive changes.
Consistent monitoring has also assisted in ensuring consistency of progress. As well as checking in with parents and applauding their efforts. All of this progress has taken an enormous amount of groundwork, sometimes taking out of our pockets due to lack of funding.
